Polygamy

Derrick and I watch Big Love. It is a very interesting show about polygamy. Every time I watch it, the same questions cross my mind. Why is polygamy illegal, and a husband cheating on his wife is not? I did some research on why polygamy is illegal and this is what I found:

The reason polygamy is illegal in some countries because it is seen as immoral and unfair against women, the laws regarding polygamy tend to relate to the historical traditions of the area or country. Most Christian religions forbid bigamy and polygamy, others have seen to harm in it for hundreds of years.
The role of religion in opposing polygamy is important but should not be overstated. The ancient Greeks outlawed polygamy long before the spread of Christianity. While not actually illegal in the early Roman Empire, it was strongly discouraged. Modern secular societies with no heritage of Christianity, such as China, also outlaw polygamy. Even some Islamic countries have moved to limit the rights of Muslim men to practise polygamy. (answers.com)

Okay, so with that stated, doesn't cheating propose some of the same issues? I'm not trying to argue that polygamy should be legal, or that affairs should be illegal, but isn't it all similar? The only difference is that in polygamy, the wife agrees to include another. In the event of an affair, the wife definitely does not agree.

And when exactly did the Greeks decide that polygamy was a bad thing? I was under the impression that the Greeks had concubines. Which the definition of a concubine is pretty much the same as a mistress. Apparently, the law breaking begins when the husband attempts to marry the mistress/concubine. Strange. Marriage seems like the way to "make things right." If the man plans to continue on with the woman, shouldn't he marry her? Not if he already has a wife.

Do you see why I get confused when I watch Big Love? Good thing it's the last season! What do you think?

…................

We enjoyed some time outside today. The weather was beautiful and Madeley loved it!

She took turns picking up bird seed (eating it) and grass. In the next picture, she tried to tuck the grass under her neck. She loves to tuck things under her neck!

The sun was amazing!!

We also went to visit some friends! Baxley and Sawyer Vaught!

Fun fun!

Hope you enjoyed this controversial blog and today's sunshine. Thanks for reading!

I have never seen Big Love. However, I strongly feel that polygamy and adultry are wrong and are not the lifestyles God wants us to live.

We also had a beautiful day here in South Carolina. I just love the precious pictures of Madeley and her friends. They all look so happy!

Love you.
